We went down for the fourth session and the table was not available. The shift boss (whom I had known for years) took me aside and said there would be no table. I told him we were promised one. He said that nobody had promised one. He did this in a cold manner with no attempt to be helpful, and immediately walked away. I felt like he had called me a liar. Being in a highly sensitive state, and not well grounded, I reacted with anger and grief. It seemed to me the last straw. I would not be coming back to this casino.

This was a big deal for me. I had made many friends among the Sahara staff in the twenty years I had been going there. The Sahara was also the first place I had experienced PK while gaming and had become like a second home to me. With my emotions boiling I went upstairs to find another casino with an open table. I had difficulty getting one (another missed sign to stop and regroup) but finally did find a table at the Stardust. The hitch was that we had to be there in twenty minutes. I returned even more stressed to the group waiting down at the tables. I presented our options of staying at the Sahara and waiting for a table to possibly open up, or going to the Stardust. I asked for feedback but did not listen to the one person who had the courage to say they were not comfortable moving. I didn’t consider the disruption that it would cause new players to move to a different location with different chips, table size, and betting odds. The group, though uncomfortable with the plan change, followed my lead, assuming that I knew what I was doing.

By the time we got to the Stardust I had broken several important rules that I know by heart—to be prepared, be in high energy and grounded, and look for signs that you are proceeding correctly, such as everything flowing well. Also, I blew through the rule to express emotion and not suppress it. I was still having deep feelings of betrayal and sadness in relation to the Sahara and anger at being shamed in front of the group by the staff. So my ego was in a full-swing pity party. Next I broke the rule to always listen to others and care for each person’s view as if it was my own. But my heart couldn’t be heard over the roar of ego, now in full command of what seemed to it to be an emergency situation. My ego was shouting that my group’s chance at having their final glorious session was threatened.

I believe things still could have righted themselves except that I went on to break other cardinal rules. As I suppressed my emotions they turned to a mounting irritation with everything. In my personal Vegas journal in the boldest, highest letters I had written, “WHEN IRRITATED, STOP IMMEDIATELY, UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON AND RE-GROUP.
